Abstract

Entrepreneurship is considered to be important for economic growth and development. It creates physical and financial resources that help the entrepreneurs as well as the economy to prosper. It is important to see the share of different groups in entrepreneurial ownership. Women constitute half of our population. It is pertinent to investigate the status of women in entrepreneurship in India. The present study analyses data on twenty two states of India to substantiate the development of women entrepreneurship. The findings of the study reveal that women entrepreneurship is under developed in the country as a whole. India lags behind China and south Asian nations in development of women entrepreneurship. Also, there is rural-urban divide in many states. In all of the selected states the share of women entrepreneurs is less than one-third of the total enterprises. One disturbing trend is that women entrepreneurship has shrunk during 11th Five Year Plan.
