Fairs and Festivals are an important part of the cultural and religious life of the people of Himachal Pradesh. These fairs and festivals have social, cultural as well as religious characteristics. These serve the basic needs of social interaction not only for economic subsistence but also from emotional integration and better understanding points of views among various sections of society including religious, ethnic and social groups.

Since the society including culture has undergone a great change as such the fairs and  festivals being part of it are also subject to change. The fairs and festivals are cultural mirror of the society to the world. There had been effect of social and cultural changes on the fairs and festivals. This study is based upon emerging traditional patterns of Shivratri festivals of Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.
