Frequency of Restless Legs Syndrome During Pregnancy in Lahore,Pakistan

Background: Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disease that impairs the quality of life causing sleep disturbance, anxiety and depression.  This study was carried out to know the frequency of RLS during pregnancy.

Subjects and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at Gynaecology department………………………… After taking informed consent, data was collected using non-probability consecutive sampling technique from 300 pregnant women who came for ante-natal checkup in OPD during the first two weeks of May 2017. Diagnosis was made according to 2012 updated International Restless Legs Study Group Diagnostic Criteria. Data was entered and evaluated using SPSS version 20.

Results: Mean age of women was 25.75±3.28 years ranging from 20 to 36 years. Mean duration of pregnancy was 26.89±5.99 weeks ranging from 7 to 37 weeks. Ninety four of 300 (31.3%) women accomplished the diagnostic standard of RLS. Association of RLS with age and duration of pregnancy was found to be insignificant, p= 0.433, p= 0.257 respectively.

Conclusion: RLS is common in pregnant women.
