Evaluation of Post Radiotherapy Antioxidants levels in Cancer Patients

Abstract:

Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate post radiotherapy antioxidants levels in cancer patients.

Place and Duration of study: This study was carried out in a duration of 10 months from March 2018 December 2018 in Oncology department of Mayo Hospital Lahore.

Materials and Methods: A total of 100 patients were selected for the study who had received radiotherapy for breast cancer. Both genders were included randomly without any discrimination. Informed consent was taken from all the patients or their relatives. Ethical committee approval was taken. 5ml blood was collected from all the patients and then processed to look for antioxidants levels. Randox kit was used for measuring values. Blood was centrifuged at 4000rpm for separating Serum.

Results: The data shown in the table gives an idea about the levels of MDA in female patients with breast cancer. According to the data, levels of oxidants is raised in patients of breast cancer. The reason behind this is the increase in the damage of lipid membrane and other lipid products which are oxidized. There was no association between the incidence of breast cancer risk with either high or low intake of these antioxidants from dietary supplements in either post or pre-menopausal women.

Conclusion: It was concluded that different varieties of antioxidants like zinc, vitamins C, beta carotene and vitamin E can decrease the risk of cancer. Antioxidants like these reduce the oxidative levels of stress which was initially caused by increase in oxidants levels due to breakdown of lipid membrane and increase the antineoplastic cytotoxicity levels.
