Evaluation of Osteoporosis Related Risk Factors: A Population Based Study

Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors that are involved in developing osteoporosis in our population. Peripheral DEXA (p-DEXA) scan of heel bone mineral density will be used to check the bone mineral density (BMD).

Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out in Lahore in a duration of 8 months from March 2019 to November 2019 in Orthopedic and Gynecology departments of General Hospital Lahore.

Type of Study: It is a cross sectional type of study.

Materials and Methods: A total of 170 patients were included in this study. Both male and female patients were selected who presented in the hospital with complains related to bones and to have a BMD test. Among these, female patients were 106 and male patients were 64. Age of the patients was between 25-80 years.

Results: A total of 170 patients were selected for this study and 137 risk factors were seen in women and 71 risk factors in men. No risk factor was seen in 38 subjects and one or more risk factors were seen in 132 subjects. Among these 132 subjects, one risk factor was seen in 64 subjects and two risk factors in 67 subjects.

Conclusion: It was concluded from our study that patients who have a high risk of osteoporosis can be identified using p-DEXA scan and adequate measures can be taken to increase health of bones. It will decrease burden on the patient and as well as over national resources.
